Carmel Middle School Orchestra Program

The Carmel Middle School Orchestra program is an internationally-recognized program in which sequential string orchestra instruction is offered, grades 6-8.  The course focuses on developing all aspects of string playing.  The program begins with fundamentals in sixth grade, including excellent posture, intonation, and tone quality.  In seventh grade, these skills are built upon and shifting is introduced.  The musical focus is expanded to explore the many key and time signatures.  During the eighth-grade year and with preparation well underway for the internationally-recognized Carmel High School Orchestras, the program focuses on intense and higher-level playing, including the study of high-level and standard literature.  Vibrato and shifting are reinforced, and upper-positions, including three-octave scales, are studied intensely.  Additionally, the Carmel Middle School Chamber Orchestra serves as an audition-only ensemble, accepting no more than the program’s finest twenty-eight musicians.  Performing highly advanced literature, the Chamber Orchestra is open to any student, grades 6-8, who has a successful audition.

The program has earned many accolades during its nearly thirty-five-year history, including over eighty Gold awards, numerous Gold "with Distinction" awards, consistent Superior ratings, Best Overall Orchestra awards at Music in the Parks festivals, and invitations to perform at the state's IMEA convention.  The Carmel High School Orchestra program has consistently been named the Indiana State Champion and National Champion.  The Carmel Middle School Performing Arts department also hosts internationally-recognized choir and band programs.  The mission of the Carmel Middle School Orchestra program is to provide positively life-changing experiences through music for every student.
